2 zebs 1 new canary advice please!

Post by Liz » Sat Feb 10, 2018 10:24 am

Hi all!

I would please like any advice anyone could give me!

I have had a pair of zebra finches (male and female) for about 6 months and I have recently upgraded their cage to a larger one (double the size). So I have also purchased a male (hopefully) canary and I am unsure about a few things.

Does the canary need a nest?

Will me zebras fight with the canary?

He can't seem to find the water bowl and I've placed 2 for him.

Any other advice on keeping zebras and canarys mixed please

Thank you

How rude, I thought this forum was a helpful place for advice. I'm sure you would not appreciate a reply such as this if you had some genuine questions.

I apologise for asking such silly questions

Liz

Hello and welcome to the forum!!

No questions are silly on here!

Your canary and Zebs should be fine together. I house my canaries and Zebs together. On the other hand if you had a pair of canaries breeding- Sometimes they pluck the Zebs for nest material although I have not had this happen to me.

How big is your cage?

And no the canary does not need a nest. I only give my breeding birds nests. :D

I am sure your canary will find the water bowl soon enough so don't worry!!

I would not be so quick to say the canary and Zebs will fight. I house mine together fine with no issues.

Thank you all so much!

My cage is 22 inches by 26 inches and 26 inches tall.

I haven't had any trouble yet but I've only had them all together for 3 days so we shall see I suppose!

Once again thank you all so much for your replies, it really helps!

❤❤

You are very welcome! I'm always happy to help! :D Flick me a pm if you plan to breed your Zebs.

If all goes well there should be no fighting. I would advise adding some greenery to the cage tho. Leafy pitisporum branches work well!

Hi Liz,

Were you referring to Paul's reply? Or was there another post that got deleted?

If it was his reply, I don't think it was meant to be rude. Looked like a quick/efficient was of replying, maybe in a hurry but wanted to answer so you weren't waiting.

------------------------------------------------

At any rate, canaries don't need nests, they will sleep on perches. They shouldn't fight, but depending on the individual birds there's always risk of fighting. If you haven't seen any yet, I wouldn't expect any fighting to occur.

Has he found the water? He may be getting drinks when you're not looking. Canaries love to bathe, so once he figures it out he'll be splashing around every day.

How old is the canary? If he's younger he may not sing, and will make it tough to know for sure if it's a male. I would recommend looking up "Canary Training" videos on youtube, so he can hear proper singing. Do this first thing in the morning. Within a week you may hear him mimicking the singing.
