Depressed bird, maybe

Post by Rocki_finch » Sat Feb 17, 2018 6:11 pm

Hi guys!

Not sure if this is the right place for this topic.

My other posts share the back store of my finch journey but here is a summary.

Brooke (6) lost her BFF Pop not to long ago. We bought Holly form a pet store very quickly after Pop passed. When Holly came home, she injured herself and then had a baby (Larry) so she had been in a separate cage this whole time.

Now, Brooke is depressed. Can I introduce everyone now? She needs her kind.

Larry is still black brakes and his colors haven't fully come in yet. Will this be a problem?

I don't want more babies though until I can build a bigger cage.

Please advise.

Three zebra finches will not work.
One will be ganged up on, plucked and if she cannot escape, killed.
So I would recommend either rehoming one, or buying one more and keeping them in separate cages.

We actually plan on getting a 4th, a boy for Larry. I'm more or less wondering when I can separate Holly from Larry so Brooke can have a friend.

Larry can be seperated from mom when he's fully weaned. That means both eating and drinking on his own consistantly.

In fact once he's weaned, it is a good idea to seperate them, before they end up breeding with each other, presenting you with inbred infants.

Well crud and crackers guys! While taking Holly out of the smaller cage to put her in the flight cage, Larry managed to fly in!

Larry is LOVING the ability to spread his wings but really?!

2nd flight cage coming this weekend, along with a bro for Larry. Thoughts on the three of them making it until the weekend or should I separate him now?

Please note, I am HORRIBLE at catching then. Any tips?

I also feel like I should move this thread to miscellaneous, since it's no longer a health concern.

Also, seeing all them together makes me want to build a whole room for them!! I know someone in this forum did it, and I love the idea!

Catching them I make my hand like a claw shape with my hands and put it round them when they are on floor of cage and catch it’s easy if you take all perches out of the perches are there gheez it’s hard lol

Also you could get a net and do it with that

I use fish nets to catch my birds.

Rocki_finch I'm assuming the three are all together still, without problems. Since the cage and buddy for Larry are coming in a few days, you should be OK. It would be best to quarantine the new boy for at least two weeks.
