Why aren't my zebra finches laying eggs?
I've seen them mating a few times. They have a nest and lots of material. They've only laid eggs twice and each time it was only one egg. They were definitely fertile, I did the light test. But they never hatch because they don't know how to sit on them? I would do it myself with an incubator but they haven't layed any since the last one died and that was months ago. They did it in February and March and that's it.
Why only one egg per clutch and why aren't they having any more?

How old is the female? A bird under half a year old or over four or so may not come into full breeding condition, and will not lay as many eggs as a result.
What are you feeding them? If you desire to breed them, they should be put on a full breeding diet of eggs (boiled, scrambled, or powdered), plus their normal greens, seeds, and calcium. Some birds abandon if they don't have enough protein, so make sure that they have access to the eggfood every day.

The female is about 6 or 7 months. I give all my birds eggfood daily, and they do get their calcium daily too.Icearstorm wrote: Squibeetos

That could explain it. Try waiting another 3-6 months, and the female should be mature enough to breed easily. Young birds often don't know what to do when it comes to reproducing, and may need a few months for their breeding instincts to kick in.

Oh cool, okay! It'll be so cool when she's mature enough to raise a normal sized clutch, I'll be super happy hahaFraza wrote: Squibeetos yep do as ice storm said I did the same not realising with one of mine then when she got about 10 months old she raised a whole clutch

Re: Why aren't my zebra finches laying eggs?
The female is obviously too young to breed. Carrying on like this could lead to egg binding. Wait until she is at least nine months old before attempting it again.
Have a nice day!
