bright sunlight

Post by tex » Sat Jun 30, 2018 9:33 am

We are experiencing a period of uncommonly hot weather here in the uk, and whilst i understand that wild finches are native to hot countries my two pet shop boys are not familiar with bright sunshine.
i would like to start putting the cage out in the garden from time to time but is this advisable?
I appreciate the need for vigilance, i.e cat's,squirells but can the heat and light be harmful or am i being daft?

texas

Two of my societies and two of my gouldians are from indoor environments. I keep them in an outdoor aviary here in South Texas where it's been over 100 farenheit. They have access to roughly 50 ounces of water all the time. They are doing well since moving in in May.

The aviary has a solid shingled roof and is shaded by big trees. My husband added raccoon-proof locks and the hardware cloth is very secure. A juvenile hawk has tested it for us a few times.

I think they are fine in the heat if they can acclimate slowly. In the UK, do you put your birds out during cold weather? How cold is too cold for them?

Michele nope I don’t put them out in the cold however my outdoor aviary all the birds in there stay there I don’t bring them in

They did fine during the past very very cold winter

I use a heater in the inside and move all the food and water into the indoor part of aviary to encourage them to stay inside then they come out by there self for a little fly to spread their wings

Also I give them different type of nesting material so that it’s warmer

Hi Fraza, only joshing about a.u.l, compared to Salford its paradise, ive lived here my whole 59 year lifetime and even though its a ---- hole i dont think i would want to move now. Just got the two male zebras (george and Ringo) they spent most of today in my garden and they are loving the sunshine we are enjoying,it must seem very strange to them having spent there whole lives in captivity, they were petshop bought so i dont expect they have ever seen the great outdoors before, bright sunshine is something we dont see a lot of here in rainy Manchester

I think your boys should be fine. My girl used to live in a petshop and I put her out just a bit after I got her, so I think they would be ok too.
I currently own:
An Australian shepherd
Many chickens
4 goats
A cat
And a bunny

Oh wow. I'm in Stockport. Nice to know there are locals on here, a lot of the posts I've been reading were from across the pond. :D
