I'm looking for suggestions for a good video camera.. I see all the videos that people have posted, but i'm ignorant on all that technology..
I'd appreciate all suggestions..

I don't even own a video cam.just use a mediocre priced digital camera.

I don't own one either...but I hope somebody has some good suggestions for brands to know what ones are better. I may consider getting one. It would be fun to video the birds.

Other people on the U-Tube have some great videos of their pets...so fun to watch!

Do you want a dedicated video camcorder, or just want to make videos to post on youtube and such?

We have a Canon S5 IS camera, that does pretty great videos too. Doesn't compare to a dedicated camcorder when the lighting situation is bad, ie low lighting but it is pretty darn good. My kids make "movies" with it and they are good and clear enough to play on the tv or computer.


This is the site that I used when I bought our camcorder, which is out of date now. The newest ones have the hard drive built in, or use memory cards, rather than tapes. When I read up on them a while ago, the best ones were still mini-dvd tapes, but I don't know if that is still true.

I have a camcorder - we never use it! I use my little Canon digital camera for pics and videos.

The harddrive ones are really cool, but the major draw back to them is that you have to have some way to unload them, once they are full they are full until you get near a computer. I prefer the mini DV or other tape style ones becuase they make decent quality videos still and you can have as much or as little recording time as you like depending on how many tapes you want to carry with you. I personally dont have a video camera, I use my digital camera's video function which is good enough for my purposes. but then again, I'm not trying to make family memories like christmas morning with it either.

Check out the Canon FS 100. It seems like a decent camera with a huge zoom. It's a flash memory camera, which means it records to an SD memory card. No tapes and no moving parts, which also means no mechanical breakdowns and a longer battery life per use. It's not the best camera for dark places but most of those budget cams aren't either. You can take still pics with this camera as far as I know as many of today's cams do but they're only good for e-mails and online use since they're only like 1 pixel. You can see clips taken by this camera on Youtube. There's also the JVC GZMS 100, which is also a flash memo cam. Anyway, there are lots of brands out there with low prices. The best thing to do is read reviews on CNET.com or camcorderinfo.com even though they might not list all models. And one more thing, stay away from DVD ones because from what I know they don't take the clearest videos. At least up to a year ago they didn't but I don't know about the newest ones.

Thanks for all the replies. My 'budget' for a Vid cam just got reduced since I had to take my little feline in for surgery. She is doing well now, but my bank account suffered. I'm sure I'll get one in the future, but my 'kids' are more important.

This was discussed before, but I like the idea of having small video camera mounted on top of a nest box so you could keep an eye on the eggs/chicks without any interference/distractions.

Yep it's all about priorities and kitty is tops over a video camera. Wishing kitty a speedy recovery!

I'm sorry to hear your car had to have surgery. I hope she is well and that nothing to serious happened. Good luck with her recovery and your recovery of spending funds?

She is doing pretty good considering what she went through. They sent her home with one of those 'Elizabethan' flexible collars so she wouldn't mess with her stitches. That lasted all of 7 minutes till she found a way out of it. Some of you know how felines are.. I really hate those things and I don't think they were meant for felines, but I had to try it.

She is eating, drinking, peeing and pooping, so I just need to make sure she isn't pulling on her stitches. Sorry if I offend anyone with those comments.

Where are her stiches at? I know my cat would not tolerate an "e-collar" so my vet told us to put a baby shirt on her (or if she is thin enough like mine was, we cut the foot part off of a long sock - like a soccer sock - then cut two holes in the leg portion of the sock and put it on her like a sweater with her legs through the two holes). Either way, good luck with that. They don't normally mess with the sutures until a few days after the surgery, when they start to heel and get itchy!

I thought of the same thing Bonnies_gouldians and asked the Vet, but they had no alternative. Lilly is a small (runt of the litter) cat, but she is 11 years old and very small compared to her brother Sputnik.

Her stitches are on her belly and chest. She had some nasty growths there and licked them till they started to bleed. I was away for about a month with my broken ankle and when I came back home.. well you don't want to know.

It's only been one day since Lilly came back home. She was hiding under the bed for most of it, but came out tonight. She ate some food and took her antibiotics.. The people that made the 'pill pockets' (not sure of the name) are geniuses.. You put the pill in a pocket of 'yummy' food for them and they just eat it up..

I'm going to try what you did.. Tube socks? Think I may have to put some holes in for her back legs too or she'll try to get out of it like she did with the E-collar.. I'll do some experimenting and let you know..

I know about the itch from surgery first hand.
