crested societies

Post by adiekaty » Wed Dec 10, 2008 12:17 pm

Hello all,
Looking to expand from Zeb's and thought I would add societies.
The petstore near me has some babies and a few are crested (love those cute guys) anyhow, they are missing their tails.
Should I be concerned with this? I passed on them until I could hear back from you all... What do ya think?
Probably best to wait for a bird fair huh?

Will the tail grow back if I get these birds? Or is this a big sign of problems? How to tail male or female?
They are all pretty quiet so far, with the beaks just now turning tan colored? Will the males dance or do something to let me know what the sex is??? Help... What to do??
Thanks,
Adiekaty

Hi, Society Finches missing tails only means others have probably picked them out. Not a problem at all. That's the condition I got my Society Finches in and they all grew back in a couple of months. I love and have double-crested Societies too - they are so sweet. Have fun!

Thanks... Maybe I will head back up there...
Can I put the society in with the Zeb's in a 30 inch wide cage?
(Granpa working on atrium)
The babies from the Zeb's fledged over a week ago and are eating good on their own... Would the society be ok in that size cage? It would be 4 Zeb's... mom, dad and 2 babies... and the new bird?
Or I wait and get the atrium finished....
Still have another cage, but didn't want the society to be alone... and didn't really want two cages...
Maybe I should just be patient?
Thanks again,
adiekaty

Oh please PLEASE put the Society in it's own cage in 'quarantine" far away from your current birds. This cannot be overstated! All new birds must be quarantined for a minimum of 30 days away from all existing birds (preferrably in a separate room on a separate floor of the house). He will be fine alone - very happy for a little peace and quiet from the petstore. And... that cage you have is too small to add another bird. So now your grandpa has at least 30 days to work on your aviary (from the day you bring the bird home)!!

Thanks Liz... I was planning on the quarintine... but even if the aviary is done soon... Its too cold to put them outside.
Guess I will just wait... I hesitate anyway with it being a chain petstore. These societies were born there.. I have been watching for a few weeks now... I would rather get them from a nice bird store across town, but they dont usually have the crested, thats why I was thinking on getting one now.
Thanks again...

As long as you are getting just the one your ok. It is best to get your birds from different stores any way, as then you are sure that you aren't getting siblings. as far as being alone, after the thirty days you can put the cages next to each other.

I have three crested society finches and they are worth their weight in gold. They will foster whatever I throw at them.
They are so sweet and never pick a fight with the other birds.

I am not so concerned about the society bugging the zebras as the other way around. Would it be okay to put a single society in with zebras, I have seen them pick other species into volture-dom..

I personally would not put a society in with zebras. They are too sweet for them. But then again, I am not a fan of zebras.
