Egg eating

I was watching my finches tussle with an egg that fell to the floor, trying to get it open. Eventually they did and ate it.
Is this typical? They seemed to find it very tasty.
I have tube nests so the eggs will fall out. 3 have been laid in the past 2 weeks but this is the first I've seen them eat one.

Completely normal. BUT it can become a problem if they get in the habit of eating eggs and then you decide you want to breed them.

If you haven't already I would make eggshell (chicken) available to them. I just keep a treat dish in each cage with eggshell to snack on when they want to.

I do give them the egg food with their seed, but they wouldn't touch any egg with shell I gave them before. hmmm. time to retry that I think. There are 2 finches that weren't with the first 4. They might teach them how to eat it.
Thanks!
