Dead female

Post by tolm » Mon Feb 02, 2009 12:09 pm

My female has died in the water. Now it had 6 eggs that are being incubated by the male. Because of my child I must buy a new female. Any advice? Thanks in advance.

Sorry to hear about the female.

When you get another hen - do not put her in with the male until the eggs have hatched and are weaned. Otherwise, if you do put her in with him, he will probably loose all interest in the eggs.

But since you should 'quarantine' the new bird for 30 days after she arrives in your house - there should be no problem. Best wishes for the male and the eggs.

What kind of finch ? sorry for your loss, but if the male is setting on the eggs, there is a chance that he will continue to set and he can feed them without a hen it does happen. Are you giving him egg food and a good diet he will need it to do his job good luck

Welcome to the forum! How did your female die in the water? Was this a water dish? What kind of finch?

You have already gotten good advice from the others, the male should be perfectly capable of raising babies alone.

They are Zebra finch. This weekend we broke the PVC pipe and use an old feed station. Today we found the bird died inside.
Thanks for the answers. And now I'll fill my profile.

Hello and welcome Tolm of Spain! The male Zebra should be fine with the eggs and raising the babies as the others have said. :)
