Hi all,
This is my first pair of Lady Gouldian Finches. I have been so excited to buy them and had to wait for a few weeks till I found a good pair.
I have them in a quarantine cage right now, which I know is small. I'm making a bigger cage to which they will be moved.

I request you all to please comment on the birds, about how they are, they are 4 days old with me now.

I must thank all of you for your advice before buying them, esp. poohbear.

Im feeding them the my own finch seed mix (always), carrot & greens (alternate days), egg food(alternate days), vitamin drops in water (alternate days). Im yet to start iodine supplement and charcoal grit for them.

I see a couple of white pins on the cock's face today, which were not there when I bought them. Are they going to go through a molt so soon? I thought they were just done !

cant really answer your question about possibly moulting. all I would suggest though is to have them in an area where there will be no sudden disturbances or intrusions, let them take their time to settle for a week or two before all your friends put their noses to the wire for a look

True, I already got that advice from poohbear to keep them in an isolated location. I understand they need privacy, so I've covered my all-wire cage all over except the front. So far only me and my wife have been around. My 1 year old son doesnt have the freedom to go near the birds area. I usually don't invite anybody to see my birds, haven't had visitors so far!

Im worried about the small cage and their feathers.

Don't worry about the feathers. Another thing you can get for them is some Feather Fast. That will help gouldians if they are molting. I give this to mine once a week.

The pin feathers may be some left from their molt. they are beautiful!!!

How long will they be in the small cage? I think it best as soon as possible to get them a larger one. They will be okay for a few weeks, but I would try to not keep them in a small one any longer than that.

Hi donna, thanks. I admire them often, they are naturallly (& beautifully) painted birds.
Im planning to keep them in there for a few more days, Im making them a new cage this weekend. Once I get that set, I would move them in, probably early next week.
FeatherFast - Thanks. I'd get that too, hope it doesnt shoot over my budget (though it looks like!) Is it only for LGs or for finches too? I mean, do finches need them?

Im not planning to add any new birds though, till the end of the year, unless they multiply themselves

It would be OK to give to any finches that you notice are molting, or have had their feathers picked by other birds. But most don't have such a hard time molting as it is usually more gradual, over a longer period, for other finches. It's just that Gouldians go throught such a heavy molt, in such a short period of time. So that's why they really need the extra boost it can give.
