adding new finches???

Post by adiekaty » Sat Mar 21, 2009 11:07 am

Hello all,
Aviary finished.... 3x3x8! Zebra's are LOVIN it!!!!

Checked the compatibility chart, but still dont know if I can do this..

Found someone on CL who has Societies, Spice And Orange Weavers for sale.. Can I add a few to the Zeb's or not? $10.00 each
.
She has her's mixed with Zeb's currently and all seem to be fine.
Mine are the parents and a few babies I decided to keep. Would the Zeb's I have be aggressive since babies (weaned) are involved.

What do you all think?
Thanks,
Adrienne

Just found on the internet that the weaver isnt a good mix for me...
Pretty though. Still would like feedback though! Thanks again... Anyone have the weaver mixed with others?

Well, generally people say not to mix zebs with the more passive species but it seems that many people mix them without a problem. I don't personally have any experience with this.

I guess you could give it a try but have a backup plan it they don't get along.

I personally would not mix zebras with spices or society finches. They are very passive birds. Eventually there will probably be a problem somewhere down the road.

I am not familiar with the weavers. If you want to put something with zebras, shaftails would be a good choice in my opinion.

I have a large zebra colony and had 2 male weavers and 4 female weavers and 6 canaries in there with them..... closed in carport size aviary...lots of room. The zebras held their own with the weavers but had to remove 3 females and 1 male weaver...... The dominant pair of weavers would harass them too the point where they couldn't rest. The weavers never bother the canaries or zebras..... They would probably do fine with your zebras but may get a little too aggresive once they decide to breed.......

I have always had my weavers with my zebras. The only time I have ever had aggression was when the 1 pair of weavers wanted to breed. Then the male weaver would chase the other birds away. He never pecked...just chased. If you are not getting a pair then you will probably have no aggression....unless he falls in love with a zebra....lol I think they should do fine. Weavers are beautiful birds. You are aware that they have nuptial colors ???
This means that the males get the orange and black coloring during breeding season... out of season they look just like the females, a wren looking bird. So if your bird starts to turn brown....don't be alarmed. He will again get his 'nuptial' colors again come the season.
