New seed hopper

Here's a pic of my usual seed hoppers I have on all my breeding cages.



I needed more so I ordered 5 more from Red Bird Products and they arrived today.

Well at first I was thrilled as RBP is a little less pricy than other online sites and the hoppers are now wider so more finches can eat from them at the same time (probably 3 or even 4 at once!)... but, (there's always a but), I think they may have a flaw. Here's some pics of one that I even took aprat to show - they all have an extra bar that is raised in the seed tray. What is that for???





I'm thinking that raised bar may block the seed or block the finches from reaching most of the seed. I've installed one on a flight cage and I also left the old hopper on there too (to make sure they do have seed available if these ones don't work). Any thoughts on that raised bar? Does anyone else have these larger hoppers?

Its hard to tell for sure but it may be to keep the birds from getting there head caught under where the seed comes into tray,I think the seed will fill over that raised bar

Hi Liz,

This is the exact same feed hopper that I have. It seems that they go right inside and ship the seeds over the bar into the the next tray where they eat. At least that's what mine have been doing.

Same as Janine said, it is the same hopper style that I have. The birds can reach the seed easily over that bar, but then they sit back to eat the hulls fall into the front.

Ditto to Janine and Lynn's comments. I have these hoppers and the birds go and/or reach right in and get the seeds. Might take a few days longer for some of them to get use to the new style but other than that they work great.

The only drawback I find is that in between the two 'hooks' that hook over the lip of a doorway, you can see a small piece that sticks out. I think that piece is meant to fit between wires to make the hopper even more secure. On some of my cages, that little piece would make it harder to set the hopper fully onto the wires. I just took nail nippers and cut that little piece back, and now the hoppers work better.

Thank you all for the comments and I'll check the little piece too in the middle on the front, Sally. I really like the extra wideness of this hopper enabling more birds to eat at once.

The space on the backside of the raised bar just seemed sooooo small and didn't exist on the previous hoppers. I can't wait to get home and see how the juvies liked it!

I use The exact same hoppers and the finches seem to have no problems they empty the hoppers out fast and all that i find in the seed trays are the empty shells.

Well I came home to find 'some' hulls in the tray - not nearly as much as the other hopper but I'm sure that's only because it is a new (scary!) item on their cage.

I'm not sure - I emailed the owners to get a shipping price to Canada and gave them my c/c info over the phone.

Red Bird has a notice on their site that a shopping cart is coming, but in the meantime, I just call in my order, so I can give them the credit card information at the same time.
