Mystery Leg Bands

Post by DVBourassa » Thu May 07, 2009 10:06 pm

Yesterday we stopped at Petsmart to look and came across two owl finches for $55.99 each. I took a gamble and bought them.

After we got them home we got a better look at their leg bands. It appears they have 2006 leg bands but we couldn't figure out for certain where[/img] the legbands are from.

Both are red. One has 5GKT 14 NB06 and the other has TV68 92 NB06 on it. Anybody have any idea where these bands came from?

Sorry, no clue. I do wish you the best on finally getting a female though.
Goulds, Owls, Gold Breasts, Stars, Zebras, Societies
An obscene number of chicks and eggs
And an incredibly rare St. Goldena Breast finch
Anyone want some finches???

You can buy metal bands from many different companies, L&M is one that I am familiar with. You can pick a color and have whatever you want stamped on it.
Most people put their initials then maybe a code that identifies to them the family line then the state abbreviation and then the date.....
but you can have any letter or number put on the bands.
NFSS sells only one color for each year, but lots of breeders have there own unique color and number system. So these band could be from any of these band companies. I am not sure if Red Bird or L&M keep registries like NFSS but you could call and ask.

Don't know about leg bands because I do not use metal ones.

But congrats on your new owls. That was indeed a good price especially from a pet store.

I think you have the fever Dianna!!!

I'm definitely addicted and so far the owls are my favorite. I'm going to have all four DNA sexed. If I end up with two males and two females I'll probably keep them all but if not I'll just keep one pair and sell the other two birds. There is only so much space in my flight and so many other great species I want to add.

Thanks. Their breast area isn't as white as my other two (which I think are males) so I'm hoping that these might be females.

almost sure you have birds who are from a breeder in Holland !!!

the first letter are the owners / breeders numbers
the second ( NB06 ) means Nederlandse Bond = Dutch Society and the 06 is 2006 and that was indeed a red color
the other number is the band number always starting with 1 till the amount you order , you will only get the number 1 or 45 one time .

my bands have now LNFJ 01 NB09 in the color purple ( 2009 is purple here )

Thanks for the info.
That puts them at 3 years old.

alot of breeders here bring there young birds to a central bird trading compagny , these birds are all for export to the UK or Japan , maybe one of those countries is only a lttle stop over to there final destiny ...

Wow - great information! I can't believe that Petsmart is selling birds that originated in The Netherlands! They must be sourcing from all over. Congrats!
