Life span

I am thinking about looking for a mate for my CB male. I have had him for about 6 or 7 years. I read that finches can live for 7-10 years. I originally bought him and another male. The other male died the second year I had them (never figured out why). I found a female partner after that who died 2 years ago from egg binding. I was wondering if he would be too old to breed if I get him a partner?

At his age, I would bet he's too old (though you never know!). Maybe sperm count is down but not gone? I'd worry more if it were a hen - then eggbinding could become an issue.

Thanks for the info Hilary. Is the 7-10 year life span accurate for finches?

I would like to see about getting him a partner over the summer, just to give him a companion.

i think 8 is about maximum for zebs as they do move around a lot and they have a very rapid heart beat so they do not live all that long...obviously they live longer with better care and less stress

I would consider 7-8 average. Of course there's always the odd bird that lives longer, but generally my birds have expired around the 7th year.
