Hi.......I'll post my first question now!

We do not have finches yet, but we are researching and planning.

I'd like color, I'd like a little singing and I want a bird that isn't mean to other birds (territorial, possessive, aggressive, whatever). I'd like to have two (and be able to potentially add in the future) and I want them to get along well.

What are your favorite finches and what would you recommend based on my criteria?

What do you think about two gouldians and one society?

Gouldians and Societies are a nice combination. The Goulds are not cuddle bugs like the Societies, so I would get two Societies. A single Society would be very lonely.

Okay, how about one gouldian and two societies? Or should I get a pair of each?

I would try 2 Societies first, after you are into finches then get into Gouldians since Gouldians are more delicate than any others.

Oooh.....okay. Well........ what about blue caps? We'd really like a little color in the cage as well.

Blue Cap Cordon Bleus would get along fine with Societies, mine did.

Most any species is going to be compatible with Societies.

OKay, and how do you guys find blue caps to be? Are they hearty birds or are they more like the goulds? How about personality? And, are all the varieties of societies similar in personality? I really like the one.........oh I forget what it's called, with the silly feathers on top of its head.

You're getting great advice already, but I'll throw in some additional ideas. The societies are a great pick. Blue caps are adorable, and if you ever get to see the male do his little "Hey Baby, I Like You" dance, you'll be smiling all day. I've also had good luck with star finches. Mine have done pretty well, and seem to be a little heartier than Goulds. Good luck with whatever you choose!!

You're probably thinking of the crested societies (called "bonten" if you're looking at the Japanese societies). They are silly! I think of the frill as the "Beatles haircut". All of my societies are sweet and easy going.

Cordon bleus can be mixed as far as personality goes. I have four pairs, and seven of the birds play well with others. I just bought a male, though, that had been labeled a bully and was kept by himself - he didn't even get along with societies. He's great with just his new mate, though.

They play on a swing, I had no idea. I guess I should get one!
Is it mean to take the nest out after the babies are out? I don't want to have another clutch yet, but they love to go in to bed.

Nests = babies. All my finches love swings. They all have different personalities, so sometimes it is trial and error as to which ones will go together. Societies are easy, they don't seem to fight with anyone. I think my Stars are a little easier to care for than the Gouldians or Cordon Bleus, but they don't always get along with everyone. My Gouldians and Stars don't seem to do well together, so I keep them in separate cages. Also, it is harder to mix finch species in cages than in a flight, where everyone has room to have their 'own' territory.
