Hand feeding ?

Post by zhavener » Sun Sep 20, 2009 5:46 pm

Is it normal for your finches to eat out of your hand? I just cleaned and refilled the feeders and as soon as I walked in the aviary door and before I could put the water and food dishes down my gouldians started eating and drinking from the bowls in my hand!

I remember the time when I was hand feeding.
The chick was jumping on my head and shoulders when it was time to feed it, about every hour.

How many tried did you have to shoot to get that shot?
The timing on that pix is great. The food syringe just inside the month and between the upper and lower beaks.

I laughed when I saw that pic, the birds face is hysterical. At first I though you were Josh Hartnett!!

I have two good shots out of 5 that time. It was possible to wait until a right moment. The chick was constantly begging.

Birds that land on you, eat out of your hand are letting you know they trust you and are comfortable with your presence. It's a good thing. I would linger and stay there all day. Enjoy!

Ikhom...cute little baby finch. I had a fellow bird lover back in Ft. Myers that fed out a clutch of 5 zebra chicks, when let out of their cage they followed her. They stayed within a few feet of her at all times, landing on her, sitting in her hand feasting on seed in her hand. It was so neat to see that, it was like a halo of finches around her head.

It kind of reminded me of the baby ducks that when they first opened their eyes they saw a human and it became imprinted in the mind "that's Mom". They followed that lady around everywhere.
