Now believe me, Ive looked and looked to try and find out what breed it is, and I cannot for love nor money find it. Closest Ive gotten was a house finch, but of course mine has no spec of red on it whatsoever as you'll see.

Was given this unexpectedly, as the owner wanted rid of it (was being kept in a shed apparently), so now its in my room, doing its thing. Seems to have settled ok, but Im trying to ease it into trying new foods, finding it quite hard.

ANYWAY! Pics.







Bonus points if anyone can sex if by its colourings too, I need to give it a name!

It could be one of two types of Society Finch... a Chocolate Self or a Black & Brown perhaps if it's European. You can check Google Images.

The only way to tell it's gender is to wait and see if it sings and poses (that's a male) or if it chirps basically like a cricket (female).

Hmm, song wise Its hard for me to compare since I've never had a bird of any sort before. It all sounds like tweeting to me.

I have noticed that occasionally (especially when it looks in the mirror) it makes an odd squelching sounding noise. Its peculiar. Ill check those breeds out anyway, thanks.

I agree, it is a Society, or Bengalese. I see you are in the UK, so it is known as a Bengalese over there. As Liz said, impossible to sex visually. When the males sing, they sort of stretch up, puff out their chests, and their little beaks are just flapping while they sing--can't mistake it.

to yours... I think yours is a Black & Brown due to the detailed scalloping on it's stomach. Very pretty!!

Also when the males stretch up and sing, they usually turn their heads from side to side.

I have a black brown European Society. Here is a pic of him with my other societies. Mine is definetly a male, he has the best song out of all my birds. He sounds nothing like my other societies, they sound very mechanical, lol!

Does anyone know where I could listen so some sound clips to try and work out what sex this bird is? :/ Cant find a society/bengalese male or female sound on the web anywhere.

Funny though, I played some other finch sounds and it started chirping along.

Only the male will sing. Singing is when it strings a few notes together. The hen or female, wont sing and will just make single note sound over and over again.

If they are anything like my pair, the female sounds like a cricket. The male stands up tall and stretches his neck straight up in the air and then has a rapid succession of low and high warbles that make an odd song but can be heard through the whole house.
