okay to give societies cotton balls for nesting materials?

Or would it have to be unbleached cotton?

NO
Maybe short shreds of cotton, but not the balls.
The danger is if the threads get tangled around the chicks feet, legs, or neck you could loose the chick.
The threads could also get tangled around the societies foot, cutting off circulation to the foot/toes.

I have used cotton balls for nesting material without any problems. What I do with them though is pull them apart so they are just little bits of fluff.

I bought some nesting material from the pet store (kind that clips to the cage and they can pull and busy themselves building the nest). It had cotton in it, which they liked, so wanted to give them more. Just wasn't sure if it needed to be natural, organic cotton. Of course I would not give them as a big ball:)
