new bird mother..... ME! :^)

Post by lillyandcharlies » Fri May 21, 2010 11:07 pm

I have female zebra who was pecked bald, and lost an eye at the pet store. i insisted that they remove her from the cage because she was being bullied badly. this brought tears to my eyes. i tried to buy her but they wouldn't let me due to her condition...... :^( a few months after , i was at this store again, and i saw a zebra finch with only one eye!!!! sure enough it was her!!! to my joy and surprise, i was able to take her home....at full p[rice lol she has no tag on her leg though. so last friday, i was taking her to the patio for her normal sun bathing and bath. when to my surprise.....i see two little white eggs in her nest!!!! anyway that day i got her a male society finch as a companion. i left the eggs in there until monday then removed them.. ( they were of coarse infertal) Within hours they were mating.. Now what should i expect??? last night they both slept in the nest !! but still no eggs now what????

I am so glad that hen got a happy ending, good on you for making it possible.

I think you should prevent hybridization in any way you can. Do you have a society hen or zebra hen that could keep her company instead? A male zebra would be even better if you wanted to see little chicks. I would remove the male society, but I can't recommend you throw away eggs that have a chance at being fertile. I think everything alive deserves a chance to live. If she does end up laying fertile eggs that hatch, maybe you could pass the babies on to people you know would not breed, or keep them yourself.

Please let us know what happens. :)
