Typed emoticons?

Anyone else notice if you try to manually type emoticons in now it replaces them with some aspect from the profile? Why is this? For example:

is What happens when I type a smile...

Does this have anything to do with using an iPad?

It just automatically changes them, it's what the site is programmed to do. If you don't like the emoticons you can type the smiley backwards, parentheses first. (:

already remembered

saves time.. but I have noticed some of the new ones have the same codes for the old ones, and you can not always get the face you want
