Right folks try this...free and easy...Open this link...
http://jpeg-optimizer.com/
Click 'browse' and open your picture to the site...I picked my Robbie below at 1624x1436...1.05 megabytes
The compress image is preset at 65 default...in other words compressing your pic by a third.Wipe the 400 off resize and type in 100 if it's for an avatar..
Now click optomize and WAIT...then this page appears...
This shows that my pic is now 2.4 KB and is small enough to be an avatar...so click on the little picture and save to your folder.
If your picture is still too big...start again re-open your pic in browse and wipe the 65 off compress and replace with say 55 and try again until your pic is reduced enough.
Hope this helps.

You got very close to the method I use to save my pics for this forum. I'm a graphic designer as well. First thing's first, make sure the image is cropped 100 by 100 pixels at 72 dpi resolution. Then save for web, as you did, and change the file type to JPEG High. By clicking 2-up you will see a side by side comparison of the original and optimized version. On the bottom you will also see the size of the original and optimized. You can toggle with the quality (it's default at 60, but you can make it higher) until you reach slightly under 6 k under the optimized version. When I use this method I don't see any difference between the original and the forum version of the avatar.

This has always been one of my favorite photos. I tried before to resize it for an avatar, but it was always rejected as being too big. Used this link that Paul gave and in two quick steps, I had it down to the acceptable size.
This is a picture of a young Blue-capped hen, just after she had a bath. She was fluffing herself up, and just happened to look right at the camera as she puffed up, and the expression on her face is priceless!
