I still don't know... after 5 years!

Someone mentioned this to me in a PM today and I realized I have no idea what these are for, even after being a member for about 5 years.
When posting a message, beside
Message body: are a bunch of buttons for formatting the message. I have never used: Quote, Code, List, List= or [*]. Can anyone tell me, and the rest that may not know, what the heck these are for? I'm such a newbie
I can guess that if I highlight a sentence or paragraph and click on Quote - it will place a " at the beginning and end. But what about the rest?

B = Bold - puts what you highlight in bold print
i = italics - puts what you highlight in italic text
u(underscored) = Underlined - underlines what you highlight
Quote = Quote box - puts what you highlight in a box and shows it as a quote
Code = HTML or BBC (Bulletin Board Code) code - allows you to enter coding like on a webpage
List = Bulleted List - puts what you highlight in a listing format with little bullet marks next to each line
List= = Bulleted list - same thing but allows it to be numbered instead of bulleted
[*] = list element - this is for adding additional lines to bulleted list (indicates the beginning of each line)
Img = Image - is for indicating that the highlighted text is to be shown as an image (this is where you put your URL for a picture to show in the message)
URL(Underscored) = A URL link - i.e.
http://www.something.something - this tells the board to show the highlighted text as a URL link.

On the quote you can also just copy what you want to quote from another message, then in your post hit the Quote button and paste what you want quoted between the code markers.
The code markers show with brackets around them.... the first one will be plain [ ] with the coding inside the brackets...then your text then [ / ] with the coding next to the / to indicate that's where the coding ends.
so a quote would look like this:
[ quote ] Quoted Text [ /quoted ] - (with no spaces inside the brackets, I did the spaces just to show you the coding.
and it will show in the message like this:
Quoted Text
in coding...when you start you have the coding wording in a bracket then when it ends you have the / in it to indicate the end of the coding....it's that way for almost all of them

Well it indents them anyway.
- Now I will try
to make a numbered
list with the List= and
see if that works any
better

Lists are automatically indented.
[ list ][*]Gouldians[*]Societies[*]Zebras[ /list ] (take out spaces in the coding)
Shows like this:
If you use the list= code you need to put in the number after the =
So [ list=1 ][*]Gouldians[*]Societies[*]Zebras[ /list ] (take out spaces in the coding)
Shows like this:
- Gouldians
- Societies
- Zebras
