How do I delete a contact? I pull it up, choose delete, say OK, but it's still there. It is marked Private.

If that is on Finch Breeder Database, the Finch Forum doesn't really have anything to do with that. You would need to send a PM to ikhom, who has been generous enough to provide this database for forum members to use. Or you could go to his website and contact him there.
