Sorry if this is a dumb question, but how do I mention a user in a post, when its the first post in a thread?

So say I click on "new topic", and then I write a post and mention a forum member, (mentioning they may have birds for sale or whatever), and I want to put the member's name in the post, so its blue and "clickable", so others reading the post can click on the member's name, and go right to their info and PM them etc.

I know that I can do this if a thread is already started, and I want to mention a user (as its an option listed when you see all of the responses in the thread posts listed below)... but how can I do this if its the first post in the thread, or if the member isn't one that's listed in the thread below?

I'm not sure I understand the question. Are you asking if you can prevent anyone from mentioning you? If so, I don't know if there is. This is an all-forum feature, as every post has the "@u" button in the lower left-hand corner. Plus, as Rancel has stated, you can mention anyone in a post simply by placing @ in front of their name.

Sorry, I meant to ask if it was possible to mention users using the @ symbol without it turning into a link.

Mentioning someone will cause a link to their profile to appear in your post & a message to be sent to them stating they were mentioned in your post. There isn't a way to mention someone without these things also happening.
