Yahoo Good People......

We're back and here to stay.
Reminds me of the end of Summer break, when we would come back to school, and have to share all that's happened over the Summer. :-D :-D :-D

WELCOME BACK EVERYONE!!!

Yep, the upgrade turned out to be not so desirable at this time, so we are back to the old forum. Crystal still may be able to upgrade at a later time, but for now, everything is familiar.

Thank goodness!

I was having withdrawals yesterday!
I kept refreshing the page all day long, hoping to see my beloved forum was back! (I work online, so I'm constantly peeking in to see what's going on.)

This was me: :-?? ...then... :-W ....then.... :-SS ...then... ~X( ...then... :-Q ...so I gave up and went I-)

...then I was all... \:D/....when I saw it was back this morning!

Then I realized I'm a total.... L-) .....because I got all.... :-({|=.....over my missing forum!

It was my birthday too. I was thinking, "What a crappy birthday present! I can't talk to any of my finchey friends!" LOL

I also didn't realize how much email I get from the forum! My inbox was unusually quiet.

Phew. Glad we're back. =D>

Jen - OMG, I thought the same thing at first -- that some evil virus had gotten into the forum and ate up all my finchey friends!
So you know what I did? My computer geek self went in and looked up the site in the Google cache to see if there was anything posted in the site announcements and sure enough, there was Crystal's note!

ETA - Does Crystal know she could have used a dev site? You just make up a new subdomain, install the new forum software there. Perform the migration and get everything all sorted. Then move the entire installment off the subdomain and onto the primary domain. (There's a little bit more to it, but that's the basic process.)

I just followed the upgrade directions, but in retrospect should have done a dev site first, at least to test out the newest version of the software. Not sure how to get a dev site to work with the current database though (and then update it if/once everything seemed to be working)...

lovezebs - Aw, thanks!
I got a lovely hat. It looks like a pug. I can now fulfill my goal of becoming like Louise from Bob's Burgers. (She has a bunny ears hat that she never takes off. And she's hilariously witty.)

Crystal - Ah, hindsight is always 20/20! LOL

I would copy the entire site database onto a dev site. Basically making a duplicate site. Then, install the upgrade and get it all sorted.
Then move the dev site files onto the primary domain once it's all up and running. (Though this part can be tricky, as with some programs, you need to change a couple settings before you move the files to a different domain/subdomain.)

I guess my confusion with mySQL is updating the database copy on the dev site once it was ready fir migration to keep up with any new posts. The upgrade changed the structure of the original database, so can't be copied/easily updated after upgrade, if that makes sense... Would have to put the site on 'pause' until ready for migration, but unfortunately wouldn't be able to tweak the site fast enough I fear :-(
