Suggested new branch : All Things Softbill

Post by w.l. » Fri Mar 27, 2015 5:16 pm

Could a new branch for softbills be added perhaps?
Without it, topics on dacnis, white-eyes and peking robins now end up under Finch-related: Species.
These birds are definitely no finches and it would be nice to be able to see the (admittedly scarce) Q&A on them together on a separate branch.
If such a new branch could be added, existing softbill topics should ideally be moved there, too.

Thanks.

You should PM Crystal, and see what she thinks.

We added All Things Canary, then All Things Hookbill, then All Things Dove/Quail, and we figured that would be it. Yes, check with Crystal and see if she wants to expand yet again for All Things Softbill. Not too many of us have experience with softbills, but it would be nice to have an area where those who do have that knowledge can pass it on.

Have already PMed Crystal, let's see what she says.
The catch-all term "softbills" covers a huge number of species, probably more than all seed-eaters put together.
I am aware that softbills don't enjoy huge popularity in the "West" (though many are extremely popular as songbirds in Asia) but it would still be nice to have whatever info is posted on them neatly together somewhere.
Peking robins, shamas, leafbirds, bulbuls and white-eyes, to name just the most popular ones, are all amazing birds with great beauty, often charming personality, and nice song as well, so they would deserve not to be ignored and forgotten in avicultural circles.

Well over a week has passed since I posted this suggestion and also PMed Crystal, and never got a reply...
I guess she is very uninterested.
So softbill discussions will have to remain on the relevant NFSS Facebook groups.

w.l. It is not that she is uninterested, it's that she is very busy. She is a vetinarian, and runs multiple websites, so don't think it is because she doesn't like the idea. Give her time. :D =D>

w.l. Also, don't forget. This is a forum for finches. There are other websites for softbills, and only softbills. Idk how many people keep softbills. Maybe we could take a poll. See how many members keep or plan on having them.

That's really too bad....
I would have loved to see more information about them in one place, rather than having to hop all over the internet.

I'll PM Crystal too. Maybe if enough of us contact her.... What can I say, the squeaky wheel gets the grease.

The new 'All Things Softbills' is now in place. As I find time, I will try to move those topics about softbills into this section. If anyone cares to help, when you see a topic about softbills, you can hit the 'Report' button, which is the red exclamation mark at the bottom right corner of each post. That will flag that topic so that I can quickly move them into the new forum.

Thanks!
Will check now both the new branch and the Species section for anything that may have escaped moving.

Found at least 10 and only got roughly halfway through Species.
Also reported a number of quai, dove and canary posts while at it.
