A place to put dates for fairs/marts

Post by Finch Fry » Tue Jan 26, 2010 3:08 pm

There are a lot of bird fairs and marts out there as hosted by local clubs or larger organizations. One of the largest places I see room for improvement in the finch community is sharing that information so that new people can find out how, where, when things are happening. I would really like to propose we put, in some fashion, a new forum, thread, sticky, or some sort of place where all can post about a bird fair or mart they know is coming up. Can post local bird club meetings, etc. The sticky for that forum could be a master list organized by date and location and even links, if available, to those events.

I have seen a few people start random threads up when an event happens and it gets lost so fast in the mix that I really think it deserves its own space. I am open to suggestions on how to make this robust and so that the information is preserved and easily accessible.

I think maybe a forum called... Events?
Then a thread in there stickied and locked each for UK, USA, Canada, etc. Then people can post a topic with event, dates, links, location, contact info... etc. The mods can then go in weekly or monthly and timeline the data into the appropriate locked/stickied location thread. Think this might make for a very organized method for maintaining finch or bird events that will persevere and keep the useless clutter we see in other threads out thereby making everything a bit easier and robust.

Totally open to criticisms, praise, suggestions and changes.
Thanks.

When I originally suggested installing Phoogle I was hoping that they will use Events Markers on the map. For each event you set a calendar with the dates when you want it to be shown on the map. I hope administrators can do it.

How about for the meantime a sticky under Marketplace for people to list marts, fairs, shows? There could be a second sticky for bird club meetings. If possible, a separate forum would be great, as it could then be broken down by marts or bird club events. These stickies could be just for announcements of these events. Any discussion of them would go on a regular thread under Finch Chat. Once the event was over, the item could be deleted (or maybe it would be better to leave them, so newcomers could get an idea of what goes on in their area).

Sally, why not have Hilary create a sub-forum in marketplace that is just for listing fairs/marts. be the perfect place for it as the topics are related
Addicted to Finches, yes I do admit it.

I think it's a good idea!

A calendar would be best of course. I can't see the sample from the other bird forum, it says you have to be logged in to see that... Is that a calendar or how does it look like?
Walk-in aviary with Waxbills (6 Cordon Bleu, 3 Orange Cheek, 3 Black-rumped, 1 Lavender, ), 1 European Goldfinch, 4 Gouldians, 2 Spice Finches, 6 Owl Finches, 4 Budgies and 2 male Button Quail.
I also have 2 parrotlets, 3 dogs, 1 snake and 3 freshwater fishtanks.

Yes it is a calendar with the title of the event on the date. You can move the mouse over it and it will give more info of the event, time, place, etc.

Subforum is up and running! Thanks all for the suggestion. I'll look into the calendar, but frankly doubt that any of the moderators really have time to maintain one right now. Now if the board members can enter new events.......
