Treat Recall!

Post by Hilary » Sat Jan 05, 2008 6:20 pm

This is making the rounds of the bird groups for those of you who haven't seen it. It was posted yesterday on Itchmo, and reports that various United Pet group products have recently been recalled (they own several brands including 8 in 1, Dingo, Tetra, Nature's Miracle and Marineland). Here's the link to the article:

Thanks for the heads up, Hilary. It is really scary how many problems have come up recently with pet foods and treats. I know the vets today all say that human scraps are not good for our dogs and cats, but that's what my Mom always gave our dogs, and they didn't have to worry about recalls!

Sally,

Be thankful you didn't have my mother for a cook then. LOL

I'm not sure how we survived growing up. My mother could burn water, and boil solids.

Oh yeah. . .It was that fancy radar range my Dad picked up that saved us.

LOL, Sean. Yeah, my Mom was a great cook! She grew up in the depression, so she didn't cook fancy, but she could make the best gravy in the world. With five kids, she cooked big meals, so there was always something left for the dogs and cats. We used dry dog food, too, but there was always something else in their dish. They would eat veggies, spaghetti, you name it.

And when I reread my post, I guess I should have said people food scraps, instead of human scraps--sounds like we were cannibals.

Okay, slightly OT from the recall info, but I think I've got you topped on Moms and cooking. My mother believed that if something got too spoiled to eat in the fridge, the next step was to boil it and make soup out of it!

One day, we all sat down to dinner and, AFTER we finished eating, we noticed her hovering around, looking a bit worried. (Note: my mother is Asian and didn't eat the same food she made for us.) She finally confessed that she had used some mushrooms she had found in the YARD in the dinner, as they "looked fine." She then reassured us that she had fed some to the dog (MY dog!!), and that *he* was fine. About ten minutes after that, we saw him in the yard, vomiting. Happily, everyone survived her experiment (including the dog), and as far as I know, she never repeated it.

Oh my lord! And I thought my mom's experiment with "fish balls" was scary.......! (Luckily she developed into an extraordinary cook after that little dinner.)

Hilary....I know about Fish Balls too! :-@

My Hubby likes those things...during Christmas time he buys a few cans of them and I make some white gravy for them. I personally can't stand them but maybe that's because I am not Scandinavian.

Hubbys Grandmother used to make and can fish balls...urp!
