Makes you Wonder

Post by poohbear » Mon Apr 14, 2008 10:47 am

Early evening 26th Feb.2008.
I was working in the kitchen when I noticed the absolute silence from the summerhouse. The back door was open and usually the chatter from my birds in there is constant.
I looked round the door and all the Gouldians were frozen and silent...nothing moved.I searched the sky for a hawk...nothing.No cats in the yard...nothing.So I grabbed my camera and quietly took some pictures.I had another scout round the yard, waited, and then took some more pictures.
The pictures look about identical don't they?...but. They were taken a good 5 minutes apart. All the birds in exactly the same positions...just a slight movement of the head with one or two of them.
Three or four minutes later they suddenly came back to life and went about their business.I was pondering this all night and couldn't find a reason.
A few hours later in the early hours of the morning something woke me but I didn't know what...All I could hear was birds crashing about in the dark.I dived out of bed and turned all the lights on.I reset the light dimmers and half an hour later all was peaceful again.
On waking and listening to the news I heard that England had had the biggest earthquake for 25 years in the early hours.Nothing in comparison to those suffered by people in other countries, but unusual over here.

Coincedence??? I don't think so. It makes you wonder what other animals can sense that we can't.
Paul.

I don't doubt for a minute that animals (including birds) can sense things humans cannot. Good thing you were at home to turn on the lights that night your birds had 'night fright' due to the earthquake!

Wow....what an experience! An Earthquake came to mind right away when you talking about the birds freeezing and not moving. Glad to hear everything turned out all right.

thats kinda scary to wake up and see that there frozen and not active like they usually are. i would've done the same thing looking for reasons why they were acting strange. i believe that they probably feel a change when the earthquake happened.

I am located in Illinois...and we had a small earthquake just south of where I live about a month or so ago. It was about 4:45 am and it woke me up...my husband was already up and when I went downstairs...he was trying to get the birds in our office aviary to calm down..they had been doing exactly the same thing your birds did.

My cocker spaniel was also very restless that night...more so than she has ever been - she kept getting up...walking around and then laying back down. I think her animal instincts where telling her something was going to happen. Quite amazing.

We live much closer to the epicenter of the quake that Tammy is talking about. The quake was a 5.2 and shook us up pretty well. It woke Michele up more so than me, but she has always said that I could sleep through a tornado if it hit us while I was sleeping.

Our birds acted odd the day before it hit, and the next morning we noticed that the birds were all on edge and still acting funny. Around 10:00 am we got an aftershock that moved the whole house again. The after shock was around 4.6

The birds all got pretty excited and then slowly returned to normal even with other more mild aftershocks movings things.

We also notice our birds getting quite and still when we are about to get a toranado warning.

Our early warning system is actually accurate more often than the weather man.

birds are not the only ones with early detection. when I was a teen I work on my grandfather's ranch and the horses all acted wierd before bad weather came.
