Update
Okay so tonight is the first night it is cold outside and the birds are in the cage. im worried, i hope the heat lamp is doing them good. it said it was 53 degrees outside but it felt like 30 or 40. i hope they do okay. i heard its suppose to get colder till monday. i might end up putting a heat lamp on the other side of the cage. i dont know if it gets warm enough. it is a 75 watt bulb but the cage is 5 feet long and 3 feet tall.

Alright.! Last night went well for the birds i had the 75 watt bulb in the cage and it was warm in the cage but i could feel a little heat near the top where the lamp is. i was still wondering though, if i should still put the other heat lamp in the cage.

These are Zebras, right? Zebs can take cooler temps than some of the more delicate finches. The one heat lamp will probably be enough, as long as the wind is blocked from the cage. Your cage is large enough that you could put a second heat lamp at the other end of the cage, if it will make you feel better, but make sure that the middle stays cooler, they have to have somewhere to get away from the heat if they want.

Thanks Sally. i didnt put the 2nd heat lamp on the cage i just left it alone and they did fine and now the temp at night has been in the high 60's to mid 70's so they have been doing just fine. but i wont have to worry about that anymore when i go to virginia because they will be staying inside the apartment with a bigger cage.

when building an out door aviary do you need a full roof or would a half roof do if you have big leafy plants, as well? I live in SC, what about winter? I have Shaft tails, sociaty, zebra, & orange cheeks.

I would use a full roof. i didnt have stuff like that so when mine were outside i had a tarp covering all the sides except for the front. it gets cold in SC and you would def need some for of heat and having a full roof might help keep in some of the heat. I just decided to keep mine indoors until i can actually build an out door aviary that will have air conditioning for the hot times and heater for the cold times.
