This is Weird!

Post by Sally » Sat Mar 29, 2008 11:43 pm

I had the strangest thing happen this morning. I will try to explain it without pictures. I had planned to give all my birds Iverlux for mites today. Per the instructions, I removed all sources of water from all the cages last night, so they would be nice and thirsty. This morning, I filled clean water tubes and went to put them on each cage.

When I came to the cage that has my Goldbreast pair that just raised 5 babies (which have been moved to a juvie cage), I see three birds! How could I have missed a baby, all thru fledging and weaning? Looked again, I had an extra adult male in the cage! How did that happen? :?

These cages are 1 x 1/2 mesh, and I had to cut out openings in each cage for the lip of the tube waterers. When I removed the waterers last night, I wondered about those 2 x 1 openings and planned to block them with empty waterers. Then the dog/skunk thing happened, and I forgot.

Apparently, this male Goldbreast got out of his cage thru this opening, and then entered the other Goldbreast cage which was next to his. Thank goodness, the male in the cage he entered is the only male that has a legband, so I could tell which male belonged in that cage. Otherwise, I might have broken up my proven pair. I did a quick head count, and he was the only one that was in the wrong place.

So I wonder--I had set the proven pair back up with a clean nest, and now another male did a sleepover with them--if they start setting on eggs within two weeks, who's the daddy?

if your proven pair has been together for a while then I dont think that the hen would have allowed him anywhere near her, nor would her partner allow the intruder into a nest with his mate

LOL, "You --- are not the father!"

I planted some bird seed. A bird came up. Now I don't know what to feed it.

I agree with what everyone is saying. I have zebras and they dont let anyone in or near there nest and stay together. But then again there zebras i dont know anything bout Golds.

I got Ahab a mate but when I put her in the flight cage with the others she ran a nesting pair of sociatys out of their nest and started setting on their eggs. I had to move her and Ahab to another cage. I think he misses all the other birds. there is a nest in their cage but they don't use it.
