Geordie, I am really impressed. How did you train your finches to come to a whistle?

How to get finches back in cages?

Post by skythrutrees » Sat Jun 07, 2008 2:51 pm

I found a really good way to get the finches... and the rest of the birds..back in.

I let them all out in late afternoon, and take the food away 2 hours before bedtime. At bedtime all the food goes back in and the only lights are by the cages. They fly to the food and lights, and now know that lights out, food in, means FIDS in. It takes about two minutes to get them all in now.

They are with me constantly and I talk to them and mimic their songs (some people think I am crazy but thats not true). So when I whistle for them they love it.

It's not that hard to get close and personal with your finches, just takes a little time for them to trust you, these days my finches are happier sitting on me than they are in their cage. Give them a bit of freedom and try to be unaware of them when they come out of the cage and they will soon get curious.

I have used this method to great effect and my finches are finger tame, they will even fly to house guests and do big jobbies on their heads...

talking about bird rooms with windows put a large mesh cloth on the inside they can still see out and get light but will be able to perch on the cloth (1/4 or 1/2 inch grid).
