wildbird, I don't see why any of those things would be toxic. Onions are usually not a good thing for a lot of animals; it causes gastroenteritis in some animals (e.g., cats and dogs). However, if these are dried, I doubt it will cause any harm.

And yes, there are lots of ornithologists at the Florida Museum of Natural History in Gainesville.

If anyone has questions about plants, I am a plant taxonomist and I'd be happy to help you.

Still waiting for an answer on my venus fly trap question, Grant. I'll try again. You said that they go dormant. Here in Florida, where it's always pretty warm, do i somehow have to force them to go dormant? Is there anything special that I need to do during the dormant period to keep them alive? For example: Do they have to be dried out or kept cold? I've probably thrown away a few viable plants, thinking they've just run their course and died. The one in my bathroom is still growing like crazy. Probably doubled in size since the last photo I took. Bob

You can put them in the refrigerator when they go dormant. I'm not certain of the exact duration for dormancy, but it'd be worth looking around online. I'll look in one of my books to see if there is any advice.

Thanks Grant for bringing it to my attention about the winter dormancy for the venus fly tap. I was able to find online that it generally lasts from November to February. The only difference during this period should be less water, less light, and a cooler temperature - all of which I should be able to accommodate in the bathroom where it lives. I may just move it out of the window then. Bob
