Re: Chestnut Breasted Mannikins and Stars
Just heard the third bird singing...
The only one is the one I got from the mart, told me it was a male...but still haven't heard him...
That would really suck if I had all males.

Have you gotten any feedback from the names you were given, do they have stock?

Re: Chestnut Breasted Mannikins and Stars
I'm fairly certain the "male" I got from the mart is a hen and the other 3 are males.
I put the "male" from the show together with one of the males I could tell was determined to breed. They've been going in an out of the nest and this "male" has shaken "his" rear in response to the males singing, followed by the male mounting him...
I'll keep an eye out for eggs.

Re: Chestnut Breasted Mannikins and Stars
I confirmed this morning that the "male" I bought from the birt show is actually a hen!
I saw the two of them getting busier looking with the nest... I was kind of stupid and decided to move them to a larger cage.
Sure enough this morning, I see her breathing heavy and I watched her lay an egg..unfortunately, because I just moved them in to the larger cage yesterday, they weren't familiar with where the nest was and the egg dented at the bottom of the cage...
I kind of thought that would happen, but took a chance. Wanted them to have more space....
In other news, the star finches are getting busy too!

Re: Chestnut Breasted Mannikins and Stars
Sorry you lost an egg, Brian, but the pair should recover quickly from the move, and it never hurts to have them in a bigger cage. That could make your chances of success much better. They are obviously in breeding mode, so you should have a new nest and more eggs soon. Looking forward to more news on them!
