Wire grate floor?..

Post by Brenda C » Wed Apr 09, 2014 11:45 am

I put seed on the floor on paper towels for my fledgling, now I put the wire garte floor in and they are having a grad time walking on it. The seeds Re in a dish on the floor now but they straddle the wire and walk on the floor. My Zebra finches are small compared to the finches in the pet stores, they look like Shrik next to my adults. Is the wire bottom okay to use...please input needed......

I don't use the wire grates in my cages, so I can't advise much here. I didn't understand your post in part--are the babies having a 'grand' time walking or 'hard' time walking? My feeling about grates is that it is hard for the birds, especially babies, to walk on them. I have had babies slip their legs through the grate and get hung up. I remove all the grates from my cages, or many people just put a layer of paper towel, newspaper, or some such thing to cover the wire.

I'm sure they'll learn to navigate the wire floor in no time. It just takes a bit of practice.
Personally, I hate cleaning grates so I either cover them with paper or remove them completely. The birds could live with it either way, it's just a matter of personal preference whether to use them or not.

Hi. I always cover the grate with a layering of newspaper , topped by a single layer of paper towels. I can't figure out what on earth is the point of grates. You just get poop stuck on the grate, which is a pain to scrub off. Plus I can't see how it could be comfortable for birds to walk on that. I sure wouldn't want to walk barefoot on something like that.

It seems that my babies now teenagers, have a hard time walking on the grate. Thanks for all the The input. It gives me the advice I needed to make my own opinion.....I took the grates out and put newspaper with paper towel over it, I am happy my kids are happy and with all the input it made me feel better about my decision. As usual all the help helped, thanks, that is why I love this forum... :P =D> =P~
