Brave Canary and Societies

Post by lovezebs » Thu Jun 12, 2014 9:09 pm

When I was out today, apparently the light over one of my flights exploded. The noise I am told, sounded like a shot and there were bits of glass everywhere.
My darling Luciano and his brave team of Societies weathered the explosion and the flying glass. I was quite amazed at how calm everyone was when I got home, after what must have seemed to them like the bombing of London without bomb shelters.
Hope all will continue well and that no one ingested any glass shards.
So a word of caution to all my finching friends, check those darn lights folks.

Ooh that's crazy!!!! You can always count on societies . :) :p. thanks for the tips !!!! I don't have a light directly over the flight . Hopefully they didn't inhale any glass like you said .

Thanks folks.
No idea whatsover as to what happened or why. Maybe a faulty light bulb, or somehing wrong with the fixture itself that caused everything to over heat .
As of tonight everyone still appeared to be doing alright. Societies all piled on top of each other in their little tent and Luciano on guard on his perch right beside them.
All's we can do, is hope for the best.

Glad everyone was ok!! Hope they stay that way. My hubby is an electrician. What kind of bulbs do you have? If it's a halogen or incandescent that gets fairly hot a sudden temp change (eg a splash of water) can cause it to explode. Also halogen and xenon bulbs can explode if the have a finger print in them from the oil on your fingers. He thinks it's most likely a defective bulb though unless there is an obvious cause like being splashed with water.

Hi. It was just a regular run of the mill light bulb. Clear glass, nothing special and it wasn't even new. It had been over that flight for several weeks and on for about ten to twelve hours a day just because this particular flight is in a bit of a dark corner. I could see it burning out, but not going "BANG!!!" Even the clip on the fixture broke, so the whole thing was a right off. I'll try to get a photo of the way it's set up.

Here are some pictures of light bulb, hook that fixture was hanging from with a clup, and anither light that I have on side of cage now, with a different kind of light bulb ( one if those squigly ones that are supposed to last forever).

Hubby said his guess would be the clip broke first and jarred the bulb. If it had any defects in the bulb the jarring from the clip breaking could cause the bulb to explode.

He said there is no way the bulb could have broken the clip when it exploded.
