Finches and Budgies - Best of Friends

Post by Sheather » Sat Oct 04, 2014 10:49 pm

Snapped this pic tonight as everyone settled down to sleep.

Who ever says budgies are 'mean' or 'aggressive'. My little blended family never heard that!

How adorable!!!
My javas are so territorial that I had to remove them from the mixed aviary and house them in their own flight cage. It's amazing that they're so friendly with the budgies.

It amazes me how peaceful my group is now, but I have nine societies, including active nests, along with 3 silverbills, a canary, the Java pair, a spice finch pair, two male zebras and three male budgerigars all co-habitating without any problems in my free-flight bird room. It's really lovely, even across genus, family, even order lines, everyone is one big flock and looks out for everyone else.

Dylan, your bird room sounds wonderful. I have a patio aviary with 3 canaries, 4 gouldians, 4 zebras, 5 societies, a pair of green singers, a cordon bleu, an orange weaver, and a pair of goldbreasted waxbills, along with 3 zebra hatchlings and some eggs. They all get along pretty well after I removed the 4 javas and placed the in their own cage. It's been wonderful watching the antics of these different finches.

Love, love, love!!

Such a sweet photo!
I've read such horrible stories about mixing hookbills with finches (and budgies in particular.) If you believe what everyone says, the budgies literally rip the finches to shreds!

But your lovely bird room proves it can be done with the right individuals. I think the fact that you've got lots of space definitely helps too, since there's plenty of room for everyone to spread out.

Maybe someday I'll work up the courage to try it with my guys. Gotta get the budgies hand-tame first!

I've done it with dogs, so I know it's possible! (As a funny aside, amongst my dogs, the smallest chihuahua dominated over everyone, including the big "mean" pit bulls! It was hilarious.
Humum to....
13 Zebra Finches....and 2 squeeps!
3 Society Finches
6 Gouldians
1 Weaver
1 Pintail Whydah
2 Cockatiels
2 Parakeets

....along with 1 MinPin, 1 Pug, 1 JRT, 1 Yorkie, 2 Chihuahuas and 15 cats.

Just don't put female budgies in with them. Thy are not peaceful when they look for nesting sites and it is tickets for any nestling it encounters in a nest.

@MiaCarter My budgies wouldn't even rip a carrot to shreds, they're so soft. The other day, Zach the Zebra finch was sitting in their cage hogging their whole food bowl, and Arthur the parakeet carefully came up and tried to sneak in a nibble next to him and Zach squawked and pecked at him and Arthur just turned around and waited for the tiny little finch who was a tenth of his size to finish eating before daring to take his turn. At the bigger floor food bowls, when the budgies are sitting eating in the bowl they pay no attention and let the finches land right on their backs to squeeze in and eat too. So funny!

Dylan thats so great! its nice that the budgies really like to chill with all the smaller birds. Your bird room is really awesome, they are really living large those finches of yours! 8) Sheather
