Sally
Thanks Sally.

You had the right instinct, but then changed it to Canary right away. That's why I commented on the Canary, but not the Gold Breasts. I had thought someone would pick up on that right away, but no one did, lol.

How do you find them, personality wise. At this point they're still quiet flighty, but (as mentioned above) they had been in the Pet Shop for quite a while, before coming home with me. I'm not going to worry about breeding at this point. They need to calm down, settle in, get used to a new more varied diet, and get into good shape. Then we shall see.

They really are beautiful little creatures.

I've offered some meal worms, but at this stage they just stared at them with fascination. Not sure if they have ever seen them before.
So I offered a bit of egg, and some crushed freeze dried meal worms. We'll see tomorrow if this was accepted or not. Any other advice for food? I would love to be able to offer Phoenix bugs, but they are so darn expensive here.

khut

Thanks Karla.
Will have to get clearer and better pictures in the next little while. My temperamental phone camera goes through 'moods'. Some days, I can get pictures as clear as can be, other days everything is blurred. Go figure. Combine that with tiny , nervous little newbie birds, and it's not a good combination.

lovezebs Elana, being waxbills, they will always be more flighty than your other species, but they will settle down some with time. I have a room full of cages of waxbills, and when I enter the room, there is a burst of motion, then everyone quickly calms down. Just part of having waxbills.

I don't bother with live mealworms with mine, they seem to do fine without them. They do love homemade egg food and veggies. I too find the Phoenix worms so expensive! I would not bother with them for Goldbreasts, but my Purple Grenadiers love them--pricey little buggers!

Sally
Thanks Sally.

Glad to hear that I'm not the only one with flighty Waxbills :-).
The Goldbreasts, are already more settled and calm today. I can't get over how pretty they are.

My Orange Cheeks and Red Ears, love live meal worms, so I think these guys will pick up on the habit as well in time. So far not showing interest in egg food really, but again, given time, I think that will change. Veggies are always available to my guys, and they all love them with the exception of the Budgies.

Do you know if you can grow Phoenix bugs?. I've read , that they are suppose to be THE Superbug, so would love to be able to offer them to my guys, but not at $16.00 for a tiny container  Yikes!!!

My goldbreasts do not require live food to raise their babies, but if it is offered they will take it. They don't eat it as much until the babies hatch, and then I can't keep enough in there. Same for egg good.

That's good to know. Do they take egg food readily? I mean I'm more than willing to supply meal worms (still trying to grow some) but I was a little worried, if they needed hundreds of the pesky things on a daily basis.

Do you breed yours in a flight, a large cage, a breeders cage? What do you find works best for these tiny tots?

All my Africans are in a large flight that is a 4' cube. It's like a mini aviary, I guess. But first I had them in a breeder cage and they laid four eggs. It was their first try and three hatched but did not make it. I don't think they fed. Then they went into major molt and I placed them in the flight. It was another couple months after that before they finally settled down and had their first clutch. I feed mini mealies, live flies, egg food -fresh and dried, veggies and add breeders blend into the egg food or sprinkle it on the veggies. Lately I've been putting it in the egg because it just gets gummy on the veggies

My male that is the dad of all my latest GBW babies is very iridescent orange, and his name is Glare. :) I have yet to take a pic that does him justice.

That is why a large (wide) flight cage is best, so they get exercise and can actually fly.

The last time I let my three Gouldian fledges fly around the washroom, one was snapped under the washroom door by my cat and killed.

My guys fly in flights.

I know, I also feel bad about them not having freedom, but alas, such is the life of pet birds. If ever I have the good luck to get rich, I'll build my birds the most beautiful huge aviary ever seen, but untill then..... we'll just have to make do with what we have.
