Safe to move RTP finches?

Post by MariusStegmann » Mon Jan 12, 2015 3:48 am

The chick of my one pair of RTPF's just fletched yesterday. I need to move my breeding birds to another aviary. Will the pair continue to feed the chick once I move them to the new aviary? The problem that I have is that the birds never stop breeding. The little PF fletched yesterday and the pair has already laid an egg in another nest. My canaries are the same, they still have little ones in the nest and they start building a new nest. By the time the canaries fledge, they already have eggs in new nest.

You can but only try. I've successfully moved birds before, but had well tried and tested pair of parents. I put the whole family in a big flight cage inside the aviary for the first while, to make sure they had settled and were feeding etc. Parents are less likely to abandon if they are in a smaller area with no nests - my hypothesis.

Good luck with the relocation etc. Know its not by choice.

I am pretty sure that the cock would still feed the chick, because I had to remove old chicks because they kept on begging and I suppose they won't beg if they don't get fed.

I think the fledged chick will most likely continue getting fed. He will beg his parents for food, and possibly other nearby birds for food.
