Pretty Bad Week

I've had two societies drop dead from seemingly unrelated issues in the span of three days and had one of my four diamond doves spook and fly into a wall yesterday, breaking his neck.

First was my seven month old hen named Jack. Jack was always "off", she'd been born with a very distended abdomen and took three times the normal time to reach her milestones in growth, her feathers were always patchy and dull, but for most of her life she seemed lively nonetheless, until the past few days when she'd gotten exceptionally uncomfortable-looking, lost some feathers on her head, and died in her nest early last week, exceptionally bloated. I'm certain that she died from some complication of this problem that re-surged - possibly even from egg-binding resulting from some issue internally that left her unable to pass an egg normally. She remained the only hen I'd had by her age to have not begun laying eggs yet.

Yesterday, I had the male society of the same age drop dead with no warning and no symptoms early in the morning, literally out of the blue. And just a few hours later, I came into the bird room to find one of my two male diamond doves with a broken neck laying against the wall.

And today, a couple of my canaries are starting to act funny; not severe enough to normally warrant concern, but it has me worried enough given this week's awful track record that I'm going to make a separate topic for it.

SheatherI am so sorry that you've lost somany finches so close together. my heart aches with you. Did you check droppings on the societies? They seem prone tococcidiosis in my experience so I treat mine with Ronex12% twice a year, especially after rainy season

finchmix22 Their droppings were both normal as far as I could determine, nothing unusual, not too watery, no blood. Neither had lost any weight. Jack was always a little listless, for her whole life, but Hershey was literally flying around, singing one minute, face-down dead the next, like his heart just gave out.

I'm really sorry. My heart is literally breaking for you.. I can't even imagine... I was wondering, the Dove with a broken neck, is that it for him/her... does s/he have to be euthanized, or can something be done and her neck healed? Sorry, if it hurts too much to answer I understand, I'm just not familiar with doves, and still fairly new to birds, so I was curious. But I know it's VERY close to home for you, and very recent. So if you prefer not to answer I understand.
Again, Sheather, I'm so sorry..... I'm sending my HEALTHY bird vibes your way, in hopes that things will settle down, and the canaries will just be a fluke, and all your feathered family will be ok....

Is it possible that something scared them both & the society also hit something. It could have died shortly after the injury. Do the carnaries seem uneasy or sick? Could there be a snake or rodent around?

So sorry for all these recent problems and losses, especially Jack. Sometimes it just seems like one thing after another goes wrong without explanation. It can be so frustrating.

Oh no! How awful on the dove too! And now the canaries?!

I'm so sorry about the dove. That's my worst fear with free fly - neck breaking. And there's just nothing you can do to prevent it. At least he went fast; better than to have one who's suffering and lingering.

Bad things seem to happen in 3s, so hopefully you're done.

I'd try to treat with Ronex as that will cover all the most common ailments.
If there's any sign of breathing troubles I might do something for ASM, as I know canaries are more prone to this than some others.

I know you've gotten a few newcomers lately; I wonder if someone could have carried a bug?

I've also noticed I seem to get more sensitive to any potential symptom when I've had a death, so maybe you're noticing things that you just never noticed before?
