What a WEIRD baby this is!

It hardly even resembles the mother or the father...

"Ma, why am I so little?"

"Oh never mind that, one day you'll be a big and strong dove, if you eat ALL of your vegetables. Now go to sleep, dear, get some rest."

Ha this is our little society juvie, Lucky, the one who our Javas fostered. At maturity Lucky's foste sibling, a zebra finch named Thistle, integrated with his own kind and left poor Lucky behind. But Lucky has found a new buddy - two, in fact - in the form of Dudley and Neil the diamond doves. He's been siding up to them for a few days but tonight actually hopped into their nest under Dudley's feathers and went to bed right there! Dudley was so sweet about it just started to preen him! Oh my gosh cute.

This poor baby has had SUCH a hard road. He hatched in the zebra pair's nest by accident and was attacked at birth, losing part of one wing, and though the Java finches adopted him, the male plucked him bald at fledging, and then the one bond he had in life, his foster sibling, abandoned him right as his foster parents kicked him out! I'm so happy he finally found someone (or two someones) to love him, however odd the arrangement!

That is sweet Dylan. I am so glad for the litle guy . Tough enough being physically challanged, but to be abandoned by all, is harsh. I hope your two pretty doves, continue to love him.

What a nice story. I'm glad you posted this. Happy endings are always the best.

PRECIOUS!!!!
Doves are so sweet. They're such gentle little spirits. I can't say I've ever encountered a nasty dove!

Poor sweetie. That makes me sad that he's lost Thistle. What a twerp. They were so sweet together.

I'm just glad Lucky has a new friend!

Was cute, but didn't last. These doves' eggs weren't fertile and they gave up on them after a few more days and stopped sleeping in the nest, so Lucky stopped too. Lucky's starting to associate with the other societies at least now, hoping he joins one of their cliques.

Sheather That was REALLY cute did delray see? He loves Socies, he would LOVE that photo!!! I was wondering if doves were like societies and Zebs, like "touch perching" and and close like the finches are. I'm sad that little bond ended so soon, cuz that is ADORABLE!!! I hope he stays in the clique of your other societies.... Poor little guy has had a tough go of it!!! But he's strong, and I'm sure his name is Lucky for a reason. So best of "luck" to him and his hopefully new found "family/friends"
BTW, always love your Posts!!

Ha MiaCarter, you've never seen a male driving weaned chicks away from the nest then. My Blue male is a downright jerk. He runs all the birds in the flight batty chasing the kids. The White-rumped Blue male is much kinder to his children.

Colt - Aw, poor babies!

You're right, I've never seen a male chasing off the fledglings. Never bred doves; just enjoyed them.

I'm always shocked by how nasty parents can be to their kids! It never ceases to amaze/horrify me!!! LOL
