Society Finches, Sexing.

As well all know. Society finches are known to just breed and breed. They are awesome parents and good foster patents as well. In the past year I must of had about 4 or 5 clutches. And in one of the times. I notice that the finch babies only one out of hmmmm I'll have to say 16 babies (total number of hatched babies over the course of a year) was a confirmed male. Due to its behavior that little birdy was a singer and would sing all the time while I had him. It also had his streched neck while it sang. So i knew that was a male. So I'm wondering if it depends on the bird if it's shy and will show its own personality later in its life that it will sign or just chirp. Or is it that the finches can choose how many males to incubate.

Just a random thought. In my short time as a breeder I only had a male finch hatch out the 5 clutches I had in the past. May be I have to wait til they are ready to mate and become sexualy active. But I know it's hard to determined their sex in this type of finch. You just have to guess by observation in behavior.... what do you guys know or think?

Yes, most of the time, visual sexing with society finches is very hard, but not impossible. Looking for the male mating dance is the ways most of us use. Many times, you will know right away with the puffy dances. Some could be shy, but I would say it is not too often that you would not see the dance until later. Aren't society finches Awesome?!?!

In the presence of a dominant male some males may not sing or display to a hen. Some will. Usually moving a few birds at a time into a new cage will prompt the young males into singing and dancing.
