An Evening of Adventure (and stupidity :-) ) Hello All.

Post by lovezebs » Wed Aug 05, 2015 4:13 am

Hello All...

Well this evening, I managed to put the roof back on my new F030 flight . It took some major contorting on my part to get some of the screws into the right spots, but finally with the aid of some long nosed pliers, (my arms were just not long enough) it was done .

Placing some fresh paper in, I decorated with some new plants, put In perches, placed some seeds and water in, and we were ready for business.

Situating the new flight (F030) close to my Waxbills smaller flight, I had everything set up just right. Open the small flight door, grab bird with one hand, close small flight door with the other hand, open F030 small side door, deposit finch, close one door, open the other, and go for the next one.

Sounds easy, right?

WRONG !!!!

Anyone who's ever had to catch Waxbills, will know what I mean. Yikes, but those little bleep bleeps are hard to catch.

Finally I had a system going, and it was like working on an assembly line. Open door, grab bird, shut one door, open another, release, close, open, grab, and so on. Then I was done, pushed the hair out of my eyes, wiped the perspiration off my brow, heaved a sigh of relief, stepped off the stepping stool, and almost had a heart attack.

Waxbills were sailing around the kitchen, flitting into the living room, zooming back into the kitchen. I simply couldn't believe my eyes.

Hurdling over a dog, shoving chairs out of the way, I sprinted to the front door (which was wide open), grabbing my bird net in the passing. Slamming the door shut, I happened to notice..... NOTICE, that the side door on the other side of my beautiful F030, was wide open (from when I was screwing the roof onto the flight).

OH MY GOD!!!

The next little while, was sheer madness, as I raced around the house, waving my net in the air like a crazy woman. If the neighbors happened to glance in my windows.... I dont even want to think what must have gone through their minds.

Finally everybody was captured and contained, with the exception of one Orange cheek, and my Goldbreast female. Chasing the Goldbreast, she pulled the disappearance act on me, and was nowhere to be found. As I stalked around the living room looking for her, I happened to see my Orange cheek, sitting pretty in the Ficus tree, very calmly looking out the window at the Summer storm outside. I tried to net him, and he zoomed into the kitchen and disappeared.........

It took me over an hour and a half, to finally, find them, net them, and put them into their new home. By that time, I resembled a wild eyed lunatic (even more than usually), with expletives flying off my lips, that would have made a sailor blush.

I think they are happy in their new home....... I know I'm happy to have them where they belong.

Tomorrow, I have to catch my Strawberries......

Oh my goodness and LOL what a hair-raising ordeal! :shock: X_X :lol:
Transferring our birds from one cage to another is stressful at best - but heaven forbid they get loose in the house!
Glad you were able to finally get them all back into their new flight safe n sound :D

Elana, you have such a gift for telling a story, you had me in stitches (even though I know it was not funny for you at the time)!

Years ago, when I got my first used HQ single flight, I did something similar, except I was stupid enough to do it on my open to the world back porch. I got the cage all cleaned and set up and started transferring Gouldians from their cage in the back room off that back porch. I had transferred several birds already, and when I came out with yet another, I was horrified to see an empty cage! The birds I had already transferred were now out in the world, never to be seen again. I had left one of the side breeder doors open.

Glad everyone enjoyed my night of 'madness'.

@Sally, poor you with your Gouldians. Hopefully someone found them, and thought they were a gift from heaven (I know I would have thought so :-)). Glad I gave you a chuckle :-D.

@Leo519
Yes, Laura, it literally was a hair raising ordeal. I'm sure my blood pressure, could have broken a record somewhere :-).

@Atbird
I'm pretty sure my neighbors already think that I'm a nut, Anna. Last night, would have just confirmed it once again, and upgraded it to a complete lunatic. If they give me funny looks today, I'll know for sure :-D.

@debbie276
Yes, the Berries, are next.....
The parents will be a challange for sure. The babies however are (far from tame), but much more calm around me, so hopefully all will go well..... [-o<

I will keep everyone updated.

Reading your story put a huge smile on my face. I can just imagine the scene. But you got them all back and tucked in so bravo. For your sake and sanity I hope it goes well with the strawberries.

Hello All.

I would like to report, that all went very well today =D>

I managed to grab five Berries, without incident. I also grabbed, two Stars, two Cordons, and one Shaft Tail :-).

Then feeling brave and lucky, I decided to grab Canaries, Gouldians, and Parrot Finches, transfer them into a large temporary cage, drag my other large flight outside and give it a good wash.

While I had them in my hand, I trimmed their nails, (only bloodied one, and corn starched him), got bitten several times but didn't need any medical attention. My birdlings however, were not happy with me. :YMTONGUE: :YMTONGUE: :YMTONGUE:

When it came time to put them all back home, I moved the cage next to the flight, opened doors on both and let them figure it out. Most did, some went back and forth a few times, but Pokey......

Poor little Pokey, (one of my Canary youngsters) has always been a little slow (and no, I never dropped her on her head when she was a baby) she just couldn't figure it out at all. Finally, I had to pick her up and put my hand in the flight with her sitting comfortably in my palm. She looked at me as if to say thank you, then went on to enjoy a nice snack of fresh romaine. She is one of the sweetest little birds that I've ever come across :-).

Next project, catching a bunch of Zebras and Societies, so that I can wash their large flight, oh God..... can you imagine the panick, the drama, and all the screaming.... and that will be just me, never mind the birds :-D.

Wish me luck.

Didn't get to the Zebra and Socie flight today. It was pouring rain outside, and I didn't feel like woman-handling this monstrosity out the door, and washing it in the rain. With my luck, I'd probably get hit by lightning -)

Although if I tossed it outside, maybe the rain would have done the job for me, hmmmmm :-?

Thanks Ladies.

Your good wishes must have had something to do with my success yesterday.

I was amazed that it went as smoothly as it did.
