Breaking RTPF cock hen bonds

Post by MariusStegmann » Sun Sep 13, 2015 10:41 am

Now that I am sort of mobile again, I took some of the winter covers off my aviary. I watched my parrotfinches closely and found that there are some undesirable pairings. For instance related birds and pied to non pied. How difficult is it break the pairings? I have a second aviary about 1 meter away and want to catch up the birds that I want to mate up. I would like to start with 1 pair, put them in the 2nd aviary, wait until they are bonded and then add a 2nd pair etc. I don't think the birds are tightly bonded, none of them have bred as pairs and can't be bonded for longer that 3 months.

From what I hear people say, if might not be as simple as that. Perhaps the pair being broken up, must be out of hearing range from each other.

If PF's have a very strong bond, like parrots for example, I would think you would have to have them out of hearing distance of each other before they will accept a new mate.

Hopefully someone with more PF experience can help you out.

I find the red faced parrot finches don't form strong bonds, i've often changed around pairings between clutches in same season, just move 1 of the pair to seperate cage/avairy with a new mate and they'll all pair up again with new partners nearly immediately.

Thx Rox and Padraic

I should be ok then if I put pairs I want together, in the adjacent aviary.
