Depressing start to the day

Post by Dramoth » Fri Oct 23, 2015 8:51 pm

Went into the aviary this morning to do a nest check... and I had to remove a dead hatchling from one of the nest. There were three happy little heads poking up a couple of days back when I did the video.

And on top of that, I think I need to throw more nesting materials in there and make up some more nesting boxes... With hatches so I can get into the nest more easily to remove deceased babies in the future.

So sorry to hear that, that is definitely not a good way to start the day.
I'd be careful offering more nesting materials, once you have eggs and chicks in the nests. You might have some birds, burying eggs and chicks to start new clutches, or abandoning their nests and families, to start over in a new nest box.

Im sorry you lost one of your little ones. I went through it too. If you're using the bamboo nest, its almost impossible to check crops without making the parents angry. I went through it, and understand your frustration. :(

I now only use nest boxes I can check from the outside with a flip top.

Well... The day just improved a bit... just had one of the current brood launch itself into the vast unknown... Will have to get a pick in a bit.

Today has started much better for me... a second fledgling has launched itself into the aviary this morning.

And... while not finch related, we inherited a pink and grey galah today off my stepsister. We won't have it for a few days so there is plenty of time to get everything sorted out for it's arrival :D

So glad things are looking up. And a Galah...so lucky! Have you had a parrot before? These guys can demand a lot of your time. I guess coming from your stepsister, you are familiar with this particular bird and what it requires.

Yup... we have had pink and grays before, and sulfer crested cockatoo's, cockatiels and all sorts of other parrots... at least my stepdad has. It isnt going to know itself when it gets down here and we put it into a new aviary... going to build another 8'x4'x6' one just for the galah :D
