A Christmas Video, Friendly Gouldian Juvie.

Post by Babs _Owner » Fri Dec 25, 2015 12:45 pm

Merry Christmas to my friends celebrating the holiday. Out of my 4 hand raised gouldians (been weaned for about 3 weeks now), only one seems to crave people attention. His 3 siblings are on the other side of the cage and wont get near. But this little one will plaster himself on the side on the cage until he gets affection.......from anyone. Weird as it sounds I can get him to come to me instantly if I say "Beep Beep goes the Jeep"

Here's Bill giving the little guy his daily affection while I shoot the video. Im getting him to face the camera by saying "Beep Beep".

He's adorable !
Amazing that one out of the bunch has remained tame.
Mine, are always ok for a few days after fledging, then they start getting a bit jumpy (and get more flighty as time goes on).

I would say, that this little sweetheart is a definite keeper :-).

Bill is in love with this little one. As of this evening he/she was chasing off it's siblings and keeping them away from me as I spoke to him through the cage. He pecks at his siblings and then rushes back to my face and to settle in for a little belly scratch through the bars.

This is definitely the one in the last video weeks ago that flew up to the camera and hung on to the cage bars.

I feel just a little sad, because when I change the food and water and open the cage, he tries desperately to fly out to me....but we both know that free-flight is too dangerous for the little one in my house.

You have a gem of a little creature there. It would be great idea to clone it, or at least start a generation of human-friendly gouldians in time.

Do continue to bond with it. It's a sentimental treasure, if you ask me, considering that the other 3 of its siblings are behaving normally in spite of being raised together. I wouldn't trade it for anything!

I keep my Strawberry pair in a non-flight cage due to space constraints. If I have my way, I'll go for a flight cage or keep a hundred finches in a huge aviary. :)

I would attempt some free flight, with the doggies behind closed doors :-).

I certainly agree withElana.

You have come upon an unusually tame bird. It would be worth testing how it would behave outside the cage. I'd not be surprised if it stays close to you.

If you do carry out the test, do cover all mirrors to be safe.

Unfortunantly to be completely safe, I'd have to build curtains that span two stories up.

I took a picture of the two open areas that have to be closed.....sorry for the quality, I also included my lurking dogs in the hallway. This is the area my lab mix caught one bird in her mouth.

Bill and I are contemplating creating curtains that close off each open area upstairs and downstairs. Until I close off these two open areas, free flight is not good. There are a host of dangers throughout the house the bird could get into. Including the cat upstairs.

Hi Babsi.

I used to allow free flight in my bathroom....
I would throw a towel over the mirror, tape off the ceiling vent, close the throne seat and let them fly.

With Lovebirds, I would leave the water in the sink on (just a little trickle) and they would have showers.

Later, I learned to roll a towel and place it across the space between the door and the floor, (lesson learned after an unfortunate cat swiping incident :-().

I can't wait to hear more on this! That little baby is so adorable and what a wonderful treat to have one so trusting and craving of human contact!!!!! The most I have achieved is to have them sing back to me and not be frightened of my hand in the cage. What a little treasure!

I really adore this little one. I have no idea how he/she got this tame. This little one is staying with us for sure. I'm very excited to see if it's a girl or a boy when the first molt arrives.

After we took the video and Bill called the bird "a ham", the name has stuck.

So now he/she has a name......Ham. We like to keep our names real classy around here. **chuckle*
