Little Teacher Bird

Post by pidgepudge » Sun May 01, 2016 10:03 pm

I have one finch in my little aviary that I can count on to be such a good little teacher to the others. Whenever I introduce something new to the cage, like food or water dispenser, a type of food, different bath options, etc, I can count on her to be the first one to give it a go.

Fittingly, her name is Mama. As far as I've been able to tell, she's the oldest of my finches, though this might just be a wild guess on my part. But she's super handy to have around.

I've been able to introduce my flock to all kinds of new veggies, seed sprouts, and food dispensers with her help. No matter what it is, if it's new and it looks good, she's gonna dive right in and show the others how it's done. I'm looking forward to when I have some babies in the aviary cause I'm sure she'll be invaluable in teaching them to eat veg and sprouts too.

Anyone else have a nice little teacher bird they can count on for such things?

I need a parakeet version of teacher-bird. My parakeets are ridiculously suspicious and stubborn. SOMEBODY needs to teach them how to hull safflower seeds and that that green leafy stuff is delicious food, not a terrorist threat that must be pooped on.

Oh, and that banana chip in the treat clip? NOT a head-scratcher! [-X

Turn towards home, and go there. Many overs, over woods and fields, streams and hills, many overs. Just turn towards home. How else would one go there? Perhaps it was a dream, and you have awakened from it. May the earth rise up beneath you, with home in your heart, and your person waiting.

I have two society hens that I consider to be teacher birds and terrific mothers, to their own babies and to other babies. The crested chocolate self society is Big Mama, and the crested white self society is Minerva. She really enjoys her baths too...sits and waits at the bottom perch for me to refill her bath!

Sojourner oh man I hear parrots are super hard to convince to eat certain things sometimes lol. They're super suspicious of everything they weren't taught to eat as a tiny baby

@slwatson I love that one of yours is Big Mama when my little teacher bird is Mama hahaha. Oh man Mama loves baths too! Usually when I refill the thing she's the first to jump back in, and then I like to say they all have a little bit of a bathing party cause one by one all of my birds take their turns to take a bath after she does.

They're rescue birds, I suspect from a bird-mill. I don't imagine they ever got a lot of attention, nor much in the way of food other than cheap millet.
