There is a person up in Perth who has 6 painted firetails for sale at $20AUD each... the going price in the shop is around $55AUD. I am honestly thinking of making the 4 hour round trip to get them
I've seen pictures of the firetails... and they all look in good condition. The only thing that I might be concerned about is that one of the females is currently sitting on some eggs.
If I can get the nest she is sitting on, I might have a good start to my painted firetails breeding

Hi there,
At that price I'd most definitely investigate the firetails,
However I wouldn't necessarily expect the hen to carry on sitting on the eggs in yer new environment for them,
If the hen is on a nest in a large cage you may possibly get away with it if you are able to take the cage aswell, that way you haven't gotta catch up and manoeuvre the bird aswell as the nest
Hope all goes well

Prices from breeders are usually better than prices in the shops, the shops have such large overhead expenses. Just be sure to ask lots of questions--how old the birds, why selling, have they bred before, etc.? I have certainly made trips of that length to get birds I really want, it can be worth it in the long run.

NO NO NO NO NO...
Went to get the firetails today... the guy had 2 yellow firetails and 4 reds. Said I would take them all. Handed him the cage, he catches them all, puts it outside and somehow the door manages to slide up just enough that two of them jump out before I noticed.
So we have 3 red painted firetails and 1 yellow firetail. Tomorrow when the light is better, I am going to take some pictures of them and post them up here.
But to say I am somewhat gutted atm is an understatement.
Still... I am going to see the breeder guy in my area and see if he has a yellow firetail cock bird and I am going to see what I need in terms of the reds. I think that I have one cock bird and 2 hens, but I am not sure.
At least I hadn't handed over the money before the two birds escaped.
And the other good thing that came out of today... I now have my Aviculture licence to keep and breed birds for a hobby.

I saw one on the ground outside the cage and one just on the lip of the cage door... and I couldn't move fast enough to frighten the one on the lip back into the cage
I was devastated.

There is another breeder in the local area who breeds firetails. I'm going to give him a bell and hopefully see if he has any ready for sale and see if we can get a couple more off him.

Absolutely pukka mate
I do luv the painted firetails, I'd say probably my favourite of all Australian finches,
Quite surprisingly to many there actually quite easy to keep and breed and also very hardy, can withstand quite cold conditions providing the accommodation is dry and draught free
