Zebra loss

Post by FallenIce » Thu Apr 06, 2017 12:58 pm

Hello everyone. Last night I was checking my cages, making sure everyone had food and water, as I do every morning and night. All was good until I got to one of my zebra cages. My normal zebra pair, Link & Zelda, had a loss. My female, Zelda, was dead at the bottom of the cage  I'm not sure what happened. I'm not sure if the stress of egg laying was too much for her or if she was older then I was told. They had fresh food and water yesterday morning and she was doing just fine. She even started sitting tight a few days ago making me think they have eggs. The male, Link, is still sitting tight in the nest but I'm not sure what to do. :( :(

If they do have eggs in the nest should I let him try and raise them by himself? Or should I get a new female since Zelda is gone? I had considered moving any eggs they might have to one of my society nests but all of their eggs are older and I don't want them tossed. And I don't have what I would need for hand raising. Any advice would be great.

Ok I looked around at my cages again and I do have one pair of societies who have just started laying eggs the other day. Maybe I should have them foster the zebra eggs? Or have my zebra male try and raise his eggs on his own?

I'm sorry about your loss.

Without the female the male will sooner or later abandon these eggs, so the best is to place them with societies.

DEFINITELY shove them in there with the societies, and soon! What luck and great timing. The babies will stand a much better chance with them.

I'm so sorry about your loss... Poor little thing. :(

FallenIce

Sorry about little Zelda.

I am thinking the possibility of being egg bound.

If you still have her, feel around her lower abdomen. You may feel an egg in there, which would confirm my suspicion.

The eggs will do better with the Socies.
I had a widower Zebra sit on eggs recently, hatch one, but not feed the infant.

Make certain all your girlie birdies have enough sources of Calcium available to them along with Vit D3.

Good luck with the upcoming babies.
