Hi,

My guess would be that it was something environmental.

Possibly some cleaner(bleach), heating up non stick cookwear, someone smoking heavily in the house, possibly some scented spays or deodorisers of some sort, a gas leak, carbon monoxide, there could be many reasons, but I sincerely doubt that diet was the culprit (unless they were not fed and starved to death).

That's the thing. I thought of all those but I had a parrot and a canary in the house at the time with no problems. And we're non smokers. All I could ever figure out was it was a sudden shock to their systems in some way because of the sudden temperature change. I still live in the same house and everyone is fine inside. I'm used to being careful about burning things or spraying things. I obviously did something wrong but could never put my finger on it. I asked different people over the years and the suggestions were all pretty much what you mentioned. I'm just going to have to be extra cautious.
