First time finch mom

Post by Millenia » Mon May 08, 2017 2:30 pm

I'm talking about me, not the finches, although it's their first time too. I know you all say that societies are easy to breed but I figure if anyone can mess it up it would be me. My pair has been sitting tight for about 9 days and the last I saw there were 7 eggs. I haven't been able to catch them off them at all since egg 7 was laid and I caught that one barely. First egg was laid April 26 and they started sitting on them closely around the 29th or 30th. I can't really see into the nest but if I hold my phone up to the hole I can snap a photo and see them that way. :D But like I said, not since egg 7. So I'm thinking this weekend should be it for us. I told them their life was about to change. It's so peaceful and quiet since I moved the other 3 (zebra, spice, socie) outside to the aviary and they rarely make a peep over there.

This is my foray into the whole softbill arena. I had a parrot for 20 years and when he died I decided I want no more chewers. And the little guys are so much more interesting anyway. They actually move around and DO stuff. If I can successfully raise some societies then I want to try gouldians. They are so pretty.

Congrats on the growing family! Societies generally make great parents and very little will be required on your part. Just be sure to keep fresh mashed boiled egg and some veggies and millet......then enjoy watching them raise the babies.

You are doing it the same way I did. Last spring I got my societies and they promptly had six babies. In the fall I got a pair of Gouldians and they are now sitting on eggs which I expect to hatch later this week. Exciting for you! I really like the Gouldians because of their beauty but the Societies are very sweet too.
And VERY loud male canary!
Keep us posted!

If they'd only been sitting tight since the 29th or 30th of April, then you still have a ways to go before any babies will make an appearance.

Incubation usually ranges between 13 to 16 days ( give or take ), but don't panic if it takes longer as it depends greatly on exactly when they began sitting tight.

Patience, patience :D

Good luck.

Thank you. The absolute earliest I can expect a hatchling will be Friday but I'm expecting them more like Sunday or Monday (my birthday!) At least one will probably hatch on my birthday, anyway, considering how many there are. (If they hatch at all, can't forget the if part.)

I got a glimpse of eggs today because dad doesn't sit as tightly as mom and she was out for her morning feed. I can peek in the hole at the top of the wicker nest on the back side but he does his best to stuff it full of nest materials to keep my eyeballs out. He glares at me when I try to peek and then makes adjustments. The finch version of drawing the curtains, I think. I'm still not sure how many eggs are in there for certain.

Well wishing you a Happy (upcoming ) Birthday, and I really hope someone will hatch on your special day, lol. Although, you probably won't even know when someone has hatched, if parents are being so secretive about it  .

Best of wishes.
